Today was terrarium (build your own planet) day at the Front Porch Library. Kary did the research, I gathered mosses, lichens, ferns and the requisite plastic dinosaurs. Our faithful volunteers, Jennifer and Jorge came and then–no kids. We instantly began behaving like adults, planning the next couple of months. Then Austin fell through the door, a little put out by the idea he was the only kid until he found out he was on for icing the cake. He was opting for grey icing when Maya and Erica showed up. He had to settle for greyish purple. They were the only kids who came, but we had a fine time crushing charcoal with a hammer, building tiny lakes, searching for perfect rocks–you know, planet building. It was declared “the best library day ever” by Maya.

Now we have to figure out how to become really, really tiny–and then how to co-exist with plastic dinosaurs.
